DVD drive not working in Windows 8 - error code 19

THE PROBLEM:

After installing Windows 8, everything seems fine, but the DVD-RW drive is not working.
The Device manager shows that the drive is not working properly and gives the following error message:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)."

THE FIX:

This fix from Microsoft worked for me:
  1. Open the registry editor - press the Win button, type "regedit" and press enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow/Yes.
  2. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  3. In the right pane, locate one or both of the keys UpperFilters and LowerFilters. You can have only one, or you can have both.
  4. Right-click on the key and choose Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  5. If you found both keys, repeat the previous step.
  6. Exit Registry Editor.
  7. Restart the computer.

The solution is not perfect:
The keys that you remove are apparently used by iTunes - it will ask for a reinstall the next time you run it. I did nothing and iTunes still works...

THANK YOU .. Another person this worked for!

iTunes did give the same error, BUT if you go into Add/Remove Programs and choose "FIX" iTunes, it takes care of it and you won't loose any settings in the program.

I couldn't be happier. I spend 2 days and 3+ hours on the phone with Microsoft's support with NO SUCCESS. I called them back and gave them the link to your blog. LOL

Thank you for this huge fix. I had come across it on the Microsoft website, but wasn't sure it would work with Windows 8. It's good to know that you're not the only one with a problem :)

Had same issue with daughters 3 month old Hp 2000 notebook recently. Was advised by Hp to do the steps above & problem was resolved. Although I was not aware it was caused by itunes & the fix it steps afterwards. Will follow through with those steps also. Thanks for the help.

The above steps fixed one problem: it made my computer recognize my disc drives again, but now I can't burn a CD from iTunes. I've tried to "repair" iTunes a few times and I've uninstalled and then re-installed it and I get the same problem: "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes." Should I uninstall my Nero and Roxio softwares?

Thank you! This solved my problem; iTunes asked to be reinstalled, but worked fine without that. Appreciate the very clear explanation and instructions!

Thank you very much, as most people have said iTunes needed to be installed again but all now works fine. Apple trying to fight my PC I think.

Hi,

I popped in here and tried Brad's suggestion of using Window's 8 Add/Delete programs to repair iTunes, and then did a reboot. And sure enough, that did the trick. After trying a few things this solution couldn't have been easier.

Thank you so much! It worked and I ran the iTunes repair that Brad mentioned and it took care of the error message I was getting from iTunes. Thanks for posting the fix.

Thank you. In particular I appreciate your comment that some third party applications may have to be re-installed. I had to re-install AnyDVD.

My tech said it would be too hard to fix over the phone. I'd have to drop the computer off for 2 days. Instead, I followed the "repair iTunes" option, rebooted, and I was back in business. You saved me 50 bucks.

I almost didn't click on the link from a google search as I had windows 7 64bit but I figured it couldn't hurt. I actually went and did a repair of ITunes....and lo and behold, my dvd started working. So let it be known, that this also works for windows 7. Thanks so much!!

The simple right click on iTunes and fix or repair worked for me within a minute.
Not only had i tried to uninstall and reinstall my defunct DVD drivers over and over, I even bought an external USB DVD burner that wouldn't work either.
As soon as I hit fix/repair iTunes, I magically had my DVD drive back.
Apple is unreal with their bullshit.
Imagine installing iTunes and it disables your optical drive--yuuuupp--that's what happens!!

Worked fine for me! I do not use iTunes so I can't comment on that but – the DVD drive is back and that's what matters. Just follow the rules and you'll be fine (takes about 30 seconds). If you want to be extra careful just follow the link to the original Microsoft help page (of which is this a summary) – there should be an explanation on how to backup your registry.
